We had some pretty good conditions this weekend with a bit of sun, light winds and some half decent swell and waves. The water was a bit chilly paddling in but it was well worth the effort.
The waves could be tricky/straight at times but there were definitely some screamers with Steve Byrnes taking out the wave of the day as my pick!
Thanks again to Erich and Wayne for another great barby, we even had avo this week!
Scoring
The scoring is definitely getting better, with the judges for each heat generally agreeing on the quality of each wave ridden. This means that the surfer’s place for the heat is the same with each judge, this means the judges are working together to agree on the ride quality between of not only that surfer’s previous waves but also against similar waves of the other surfers in the heat, this is very important!
There was still some repeated scores and a few scores without a decimal part, this can make working out places tricky at times as we end up with the same totals for more than one surfer in the heat. For example, 2 surfers may both have the highest 2 wave scores of say 4.5 and 5.5 so they both have the best 2 wave total of 10, working out who has the higher place in that heat is a lot harder without reviewing all the other scores etc.
Overall the scoring was very good but just remember these few points:
Score to the conditions – be careful not to score too low (typically on a day with poor conditions) or too high, talk with the other judges to work out what you all think is an appropriate score to kick off with making sure to leave room to go both up and down depending on the ride quality.
No 2 waves are the same – there shouldn’t be 2 of the same scores for the same surfer or even between other surfers in the same heat, use the decimal scale to differentiate the 2 waves when they are very similar.
Talk with the other judges – talk to the other judges to reach a consensus of how to score the surfers wave compared to that surfer and the other surfers waves in the heat. Remember, it’s not so much the actual score you give, it’s more about how the score compares with the other waves surfed in the heat. The 2 wave totals do not have to be the same but the placements given using these totals should.
Ok, enough of that, here’s the results:
